People say you are who you hang with for a reason. The people who compose your social circle are vitally important to your life.
This post isn’t about how to meet wealthy men per se, it’s about how to meet people who live outside of your current station in life with the purpose of helping you to attain the life you want – living well. Men and women can use these tips with equal efficacy.
The brainier the better these days and the more prestigious your credentials the better off you’ll be. Consider getting an advanced degree, an MBA is preferable as it will give you the most flexibility. An MBA or a JD will help you to land a career that will allow you to circulate among the wealthy. Birds of a feather flock together and where there are billionaires there will be millionaires and so on and so forth. Focus on industries and businesses with the greatest accumulation of wealth: finance, investments, service, media and entertainment, and real estate.
It’s also necessary to keep up with current events and to know what’s going on in the world so that you can have something interesting to talk about- other than the latest TMZ gossip. I admit this one is a bit difficult for me as I largely don’t trust the mainstream American media to tell the truth about anything. Seek out news and information from multiple and international sources like the BBC.
Cultivate a taste for museums and become a member not just a visitor. Focus on modern art (late 19th century to 1970) and contemporary art (post 1970)- what the wealthy have been buying. Make a list of private art galleries in your city and see if you can get on their mailing lists. Many galleries do hold cocktail parties and other private events. Consider taking an etiquette class so that you’ll be minding the right manners at said party. Also learn to enjoy the opera and the ballet. Research charity events and philanthropies in your area; just type “charity events” and the name of your city in Google search and voila! You can also become a grantee yourself by starting your own charity (Heather Mills).
Live where the wealthy live. No matter what your budget you can find something within 16 blocks of the big bucks. Study the wealthy neighborhoods in your city and state. Use Money Magazine’s interactive map to help you.
Make New Friends
Expand your social circle using online dating sites. This doesn’t mean abandon your old friends- unless they’ve proven themselves to be dead weight. You social circle should not just reflect people in the same boat as you are but, people that have already achieved the lifestyle you desire. With that said make sure you associate with people who embrace you and want to let you in and show you the ropes.
Look the Part
Birds of a feather flock together so be a status faker and look the part. Make an investment in the type of clothing and grooming that will help you mix among the high net worth. Look to designers like Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera, Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin, and Dior for guidance/examples. In many major cities you can find decent knock offs or look-a-likes of these brands. Also look to consignment shops and/or thrift stores either online or in your town for used designer merchandise.
Travel, period. Traveling broadens your horizons and expands your awareness of the world around you thus giving you interesting subject matter to talk about. It makes you more interesting. So travel, period. Whether it's Vancouver or Cape Town, just go! Also consider vacation in the typical vacation spots of the wealthy. In fall and winter take up skiing in Aspen or lay out on the beaches of St. Barts, Hawaii, or Bimini.
